I Heart Hrvatska: Food & Language & Transportation
The Good Stuff, Food and Drink: To start with most local restaurants will offer you...rakija, which is basically a fruit brandy. Made out of grapes it is grappa, out of plums it is slivovitz. Some is delicious and smooth, some will, as my grandpa used to say, put hair on your chest. But it is all fun to try. Try and find some of the herbally yummy stuff or a homemade option if you can. Rakija (pronnounced rack-ee-ya). Beer is Pivo (Peee-vo), wine is vino (easy), and water is
Bosnia: Mostar and Sarajevo
Bosnia: Bosnia is beautiful and has a distinctively different feel than Croatia. We took at day trip there through a company that I will link below. After you get about 10km away from the border you can feel the difference, you start to see the minaret towers along with the church steeples in the towns and hear the Muslim call to prayer. I didn't know that Bosnia is basically divided into the Republic of Srpska and The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, this is why we trav

I Heart Hrvatska: Dubrovnik the Pearl of the Adriatic
This city truly is unique in its scale and location. We have now been to quite a few other old towns and we wondered if we would be as dazzled by Dubrovnik when we ended up there again, and we just were. However, it is also getting VERY popular as a result, which as with most things, is kind of a bummer. The cruise ships hit it usually between 10am-4pm, and at the point it is a bit overwhelming. I would suggest walking the walls and wandering in the Old City first thing in th
I Heart Hrvatska: And Hvar
Hvar is very special. :)The picture says it all. Food: *Konobo Maestro*: We went here twice, in four nights on the island. We were those tourists, but the first night we were too late for the octopus peka style, ie ocotopus roasted for four hours under an iron bell. The first night there was also delicious but we had to come back for the peka, and it was very, very worth it. Fig Hvar: We breakfasted here. It was delicious. Konobo Menego: Climb up approximately 47 steps and th
I Heart Hrvatska: Split & Surrounding Fun
Diocletian's Palace is the main draw. It is fun to explore that area but it is very commercialized and basically a shopping mall, but its in an actual Roman Forum, so that that Ceasars Palace. Also a jumping off point to many of the island get aways. Klis: Outside of Split is the Fortress Klis, awesome views and yet another Game of Thrones filming location (you'll pick up on that trend everywhere). Klis is VERY worth visiting for lamb on a spit, a traditional Croatian dish th

I Heart Hrvatska: Zadar
Watching a sunset here at the Sea Organ, its one of my favorite things in Croatia. Or in the world. Zadar has a fortified old town "Stari Grad" with a Riva/Embarcadero that stretches out into the Adriatic and has this built in art installation that is a Sea Organ. The water actually plays the pipes as the waves come in, it is magical. The old town here is maybe not the most picturesque, but it still feels vibrant and like a living thriving community. It hasn't been turned int

I Heart Hrvatska: Zagreb
The old part of the city is lovely to walk around, it reminds me a lot of Prague or lot of other eastern European Capitals. You wont be able to miss Josipa Jelačića Square, this to me feels like the central hub and beating heart of the city. Activities: Museum of Broken Relationships: This surprised us by how much we enjoyed it. An interesting concept and a nice break from the standard art museum and cultural museum travel fare, Etnografski (Ethnographic) Museum: Fabric and t

I Heart Hrvatska: Which Waterfalls? Croatia's Stunning National Parks
There are two national parks known for their waterfalls in Croatia, Plitvice and Krka. Get ready to be amazed! Plitvice is larger and more spectacular. It is in the center of the country. There is now a limit to the amount of tickets that they sell in a day, which is a good thing because this (and Dubrovnik) are the top attractions in the country, so it gets very, very busy. Think Disneyland busy. Buy your tickets online on their website ahead of time. There are bus loads of
